I don't understand why undo/redo is linear in all applications I've ever used!

Why can't I select a part of the document or image or whatever and say give me a list of everything I've ever done in this area, and let me undo anything in that list, no matter if it's the latest or the first change?

@sotolf That's cool! But can you also say "give me this specific part like it was 15 minutes ago"? Because my problem is that I change things all over the place, and don't want o undo all the other changes if I find out that there was one change I did long ago that I shouldn't have done.

@forteller I think both vim and emacs has undo trees, the fun thing in vim is that you can time-travel, so you can say give me the file how it was 15 minutes ago.
