   #ClimateDiary have been seeing the “people need #hope to get engage in #ClimateAction” argument quite a lot recently, and it’s made me reflect.

   For me, hope doesn’t actually come into it. I don’t care whether we have “hope” or not. For me it’s anger, fear, responsibility, guilt, and perhaos also (just to add one positive one) a growing sense of personal empowerment that drive me to try everything i can. These are all very strongly motivating emotions too

     And we should acknowledge that people are not a monolith. What motivates some is demotivating to others. We need as many people as possible motivated to make change, so understanding the broader psychology and range of psychological makeup of people is important.

     I would also second @pvonhellermannn's rec of the book Active Hope and any book by Solnit.

     I agree. What worries me in a part of the climate bubble is the narrative "don't be so negative with all the dooming, we need positivity and hope to get people in action". But at this stage of #ClimateChange, we are long beyond positivity, and I'd wish for more honesty. No more lying to others or ourselves, that "everythings gonna be alright". Because it won't. It's just preventing the worst, and that fulfills me more with (helpful)bitterness-action than with hope-action, too.
