    Just realized something:

I wonder how many of the "Decentralization won't work unless it's blockchain" folks are too young to have used BitTorrent.

Decentralization without nomadic identities in the year of our lord and savior Jesus Christ 2023 🙏 is a huge problem that will prevent it from being adopted as the internet's lowest common denominator for social interaction by a billion+ internet users

Decentralization does work, and the fediverse may last 50+ years, but the userbase will probably not even reach 100M people which is a damn shame

      Pulling some stats:

      > The latest data reveal that more than two-thirds of the world's total population now uses a mobile phone, with the number of “unique” mobile users reaching 5.48 billion in April 2023.

      > In 2020, the number of global e-mail users amounted to four billion and is set to grow to 4.6 billion users in 2025.

You can reach almost everyone on the planet with a phone number. Possibly more than by physical mail!

email is basically the next best option.

The fediverse will never displace either of these. Not even close. And that's a damn shame because the goal for the fediverse should be to get everyone on the planet connected through this medium to officially kill the proprietary social platforms
