     Speaking of which, I don't understand the phrasing of "remote profiles" (the model for this one) either.

     I know what it does, but not what "display publicly ... to get messages" or "extra step to federate messages" is supposed to mean

     The app will fetch remotely all profile messages from the targeted instance (ie where the account is registered).

     This feature doesn't use any token and use the public API from the targeted timeline.
