I'm not sure as I haven't seen it in action, but it sounds like Mastodon's official Groups feature might be somewhat Facebook-groups style?

It's on the roadmap as being under development. However, it is very overdue (it was supposed to be finished in 2022) so I've no idea if they've hit some kind of roadblock?

Actual working groups options on here include Guppe & Chirp & Friendica groups which are special accounts that repeat what is posted to them:

Friendica's groups work similarly to Guppe and Chirp, but Friendica groups require an admin who is on a Friendica server. Guppe doesn't need an admin and Chirp has admins who log in on a separate website.

I don't know much about Calckey's groups, haven't had a chance to play with them yet.

What about Friendica's and Calckey's groups (not sure if they also exist in Misskey)?

I haven't had the opportunity to play much with those, but I think it's the closest thing we have to private groups.

Yeah, Mobilizon was specifically created as a free open Fediverse alternative to Facebook Events (and similar event platforms). It's by the same organisation as PeerTube.

@enigmalea @feditips Oh. I had not heard of this one. Intriguing. It seems very focused on *events*, but the *discussions* section may be what I'm looking for (so long as one instance can have many different groups on it with their own moderators - otherwise it'll fall into the same shortfalls for why PHPBB and SMF aren't qhat I'm looking for). I also wonder if it supports private groups. I'll have to find an instance and check it out. Thank you!

@feditips@mstdn.social @valashawkwinter@nerdica.net There's Mobilizon, which I only know of in passing, which seems to be trying to fill the Events/Groups niche.

Yeah, Guppe and Chirp aren't forum-like at all, I only mention them because they're available now.

There is an actual forum software project called NodeBB which is currently working on adding Fediverse support, you can follow them at @nodebb

I looked into Guppe and Chirp. I'm on Friendica, missed that there were 'Friendica groups'.

But, Guppe & Chirp were not quite the same type of thing, though they do look useful for other stuff. The Private FB Groups, you need to be approved by a moderator to join; and you can only see the posts in the group if you're in the group; and discussions are sorted into threads not so much individual posts like mastodon & friendica - akin to oldschool forums with the permissions set up so you need to be logged in to see the posts, just without each forum needing to be a separately hosted website people need to manage individual accounts for.

Hmm. It sounds like so far there likely isn't a federated equivalent for me to ditch the things I use Facebook for. That's unfortunate. I will keep an eye out for "Mastodon Groups" and see how close it gets to the "'private' communities" I use Facebook for. Guppe Groups and Chirp Groups might work for more simple 'public meme group' equivalents though. I guess my Facebook account stays for now, unless Friendica Groups will do the thing. I will look into its functionality. Thanks. 💖
