So now guess what? Elon's space junk is screwing up radio astronomy too.

New Radio Astronomical Observations Confirm Unintended Electromagnetic Radiation Emanating from Large Satellite Constellations >>> https://cps.iau.org/news/new-radio-astronomical-observations-confirm-unintended-electromagnetic-radiation-emanating-from-large-satellite-constellations/

    Anybody surprised?

And the plan is to let him launch 30,000 of these monstrosities!

@dubiago @AstroMigration Astronomy is not just the kind of big telescopes you are thinking of. There are facilities, that study different aspects of astronomy that are spread out over large areas. There are other efforts that coordinate observations from systems all over the world.

To write off all terrestrial astronomy because some rich a-hole wants to litter space with thousands of internet sats is a bad tradeoff.

@mastodonmigration @AstroMigration The intentions are good. I think, sadly, that astronomy and studies in astrophysics will become a thing that needs to be done out of LEO. We'll put up more space telescopes, and that's where genuine study will be done. Maybe that's better for radio astronomy--get away from earthly interference, both on the ground and in the skies.

@carl GPS and TV sats are geosynchronous satellites. Elon's menace is in LEO (low earth orbit). Geosync is much much higher, so it will likely still work, but LEO will be a mess. Things like the Space Station will be impossible, and terrestrial astronomy will be severely compromised (it already has been). Just transiting through LEO will be more dangerous.

@mastodonmigration And exactly this will happen. Enjoy satellite-based locations services like GPS and satellite TV (well"enjoying"mightbeabitmuchforthisbutanyway) as long as you can. It will be rendered impossible in the foreseeable future.

      How bad will it get?

"...unless regulators cap the number of satellites in orbit, collisions will soon become a regular part of the space business. Such collisions would lead to rapid growth in the amount of space debris fragments that are completely out of control, which would lead to more and more collisions. The end point of this process might be the Kessler Syndrome... an unstoppable cascade of collisions that might render parts of the orbital environment completely unusable."

@carl Oh there are plenty of things in LEO for him to destroy, just not GPS and othe geosync assets. Hitting the space station might wake people up.

@ThisSideOfThePond @harriettmb That's actually a concern. Nobody is going to police anything. When they release whatever "federation" they actually do, it will already be baked in that they are open and wonderful based on these leadup assumptions. These are some of the craftiest marketeers in the world. We should just be cautious with assuming too much and giving them credit before they actually do anything.

@mastodonmigration @ThisSideOfThePond No matter how difficult or expensive it is, it is something that really needs to be done. Will space junk turn into a belt of stuff in a permanent orbit around Earth, or randomly wander about in space causing problems? The rules from day one should be that everything sent up must be brought back - every single thing. I’d like to see no more missions by spaceX, starlink or any others until the junk is gone.

@harriettmb @mastodonmigration For large ones I think it's possible. But smaller ones generated by collisions are very expensive to capture because of their sheer quantity, and are as capable of causing unrepairable damage to satellites as bigger ones.

@mastodonmigration Is there a way the space junk can be captured? because that’s what really needs to happen. No one of it should be up there in the first place - a prime example of ‘your rubbish - you bring it home’. And there’s no way they should say it’s unaffordable or not possible. Enough billionaires creating havoc in our seas and our space already. The bill should not be on the taxpayer.
