   There's an alternative version of Mastodon called "Mastodon Glitch Edition" (aka "glitch-soc" or just "Glitch"). Glitch is totally compatible with normal Mastodon, but adds experimental new features.

   For example, Glitch instances let the admin alter the character limit, allow local posting, text formatting and lots of other stuff.

   Many features in Glitch have eventually made their way into normal Mastodon after proving themselves stable and useful.

   If you run your own Mastodon instance you can switch to Glitch, and switch back again if you don't like it.

   (You may be wondering how this post is so long? It's because FediTips is on an instance that uses Glitch, and the instance character limit has been extended to 1000.)

     If you're okay with using vanilla Mastodon, you can get a managed hosting instance starting from about $8 a month. Managed hosting means they do all the techy stuff, it opens it up to non-tech people.

     That still needs command line access and a VPS I am guessing?

     Managed hosting really has no techy stuff at all, you just sign up, pay a fee and they do everything. It's like signing up for a webmail account.

     @feditips@mstdn.social @evilcookies98@dragonscave.space calckey is also good for people that don't know much about server stuff as the whole setup only is 2 commands for the auto installer.

     @feditips@mstdn.social @evilcookies98@dragonscave.space also what i don't like about managed hosting is that it's basically all only mastodon. Never saw one providing alternatives.

     @feditips@mstdn.social @evilcookies98@dragonscave.space yes it does. But it's a bit cheaper than managed hosting. I pay for 40GB storage right now around 5€.

     Apparently the variable is deliberately obscured on vanilla Mastodon because the lead developer wanted to keep the timeline neater with uniform post lengths.

     Fortunately non-vanilla Mastodon versions have made it easier to adjust 😁

     @feditips I was wondering how some instances were able to change their character limits and add new features! I was looking everywhere for some hard-coded variable to change. I should give this a try!
