But given the first time I heard about it it was people bitching about "my players demand I DM like Matt Mercer" or "my DM tries to run the game exactly like Matt" I am really uninterested.

  @Deplorable_Degenerate @McMongoose @Trill_Bread Mercer himself have spoken out about this multiple times, explaining the huge difference between their highly professional produced show VS a home game.
  
  I started playing D&D in the mid 80s as a DM, and I could not play a game with your average players I read about today. Wanting trigger warning on everything, oh and please no alcohol (cus my dad beat me as a kid when drunk) oh and please no Elf jokes, those are homophobic, oh and you will have to role-play with my tranny self insert character. Fuck those people, they ruined a good hobby.

  3 was the best, 3.5 was designed to introduce minis and began the downfall of the game.
  You need the brutality of 2, the combat of 3, and the options of 5.
  I am 2 years into development of a ttrpg, I have the combat and inventory nearly fleshed out, rough drafts of races and classes, spells and monsters are in very early stages.
