   @Nephos @ifixcoinops It’s a string in the API. It’s definitely not the official naming convention, not since a few years back. They’re servers.

     @ifixcoinops Instance is in the official naming convention (https://docs.joinmastodon.org/entities/instance/), so this is definitively correct, it is a personal taste.

     Also server may refer to hardware or software so it may be confusing too, depending on the context.

     why the hell do people keep saying "instances" rather than "servers" or "websites," is it just to confuse the noobs
