Chaser: Kids in Japan are remarkably independent from a very young age — way more independent than children in the US. In Japanese cities, fifth-graders make 85 percent of their weekday trips without a parent. And it definitely has something to do with the way Japanese neighborhoods are designed.
Shot: kids in America might be suffering because we've built neighborhoods around cars, we lack community infrastructure, & because we don't know how to let them be independent within the Child Protective Services Industrial Complex.
