     4.5m is way too low, lowest estimate I've seen a while back was 7m but that was definitely an undercount because it relied on servers that had opted into giving stats.

     It's difficult to be sure because not all servers have stats submission switched on (it's an option in admin settings), but I'm guessing 8-12 million is the right kind of area at the moment.

     Then they've been looking in the wrong places, I have no idea where they plucked that figure from. The lowest I can find anywhere is 7.8 million.
