Lots of "Keep the popular kids out of our clubhouse, because we're better than them" vibes going around Mastodon.

@DeathKitten @BlackAzizAnansi @philip @adhdmarie @kv I think the biggest take-away here is that when you only see a certain viewpoint about social media (the people who are here and have figured out the complexities and idiosyncrasies of the platform), and drive off the voices who are like "please can this be easier for me and my limitations?" and it's met with "here's a long and intensive pathway for you to get what you want out of this space," it's gunna drive away a very vulnerable population of users into platforms who will take advantage of their need for ease of use. The elderly, disabled, marginalized communities. We gotta do better for usability and accessibility because the options are data mining of vulnerable folks.

@BlackAzizAnansi @philip @adhdmarie @kv Or they offloaded the labor of setting everything up to the *one* technical user in the family.

Speaking as one of the technical users, I literally told my Dad "I use linux now, I forget how Windows works" because the amount of unpaid labor involved was *insane*. So instead he had a spyware infested computer, and then ended up the tech support for his parents who were even worse.

Fuck Meta, but that means we need to make the Fediverse more accessible.

@adhdmarie @kv @BlackAzizAnansi Asking out of genuine interest to understand here: What did those people do before the internet was easy?

There was a time before ~2010 where nobody had algorithmic timelines, where every service was “hard” to sign up for, and you had to care about which email provider you were going to use because they were not created equal.

From my perspective, it seemed like “non-technical” people coped just fine then. What changed?

@kv @BlackAzizAnansi Yes! This is the strength of the Fediverse. Its weakness is in the fact that its user experience can be difficult to navigate for people who aren't technically-minded, or who are used to algorithm-based services that do all the work for them.

When people do make the effort to sign up, the last thing they need is a bunch of people telling them they are somehow morally and intellectually inferior for not getting here sooner. But that's what they read here. Daily.

@adhdmarie @BlackAzizAnansi there's definitely been a bit of a culture shift since I joined, and it's for the better. Weird rules about throwing almost everything behind a CW for example. Quote Replies being "toxic and harassment" etc. The nice thing about the fediverse is if folks want an island, they can have one and de-federate from any instance culture they disagree with.

@BlackAzizAnansi Saw a toot a couple of days ago that insisted that there should be *more* friction for new users. They didn't care that a less streamlined experience would keep the "normies" out. They prefer it that way. It's just gatekeeping.

Those same kinds of people will whinge and bitch about people going to the likes of Meta/Bluesky/Twitter. Headass behaviour.
