calling on people who have faith!
i found an injured pigeon in my yard today. i don't think she's gonna make it. she's sitting on a fluffy old towel in a carrier that is covered with another couple of old towels, and it's in the spare room. so she's warm, and has seeds and water, but... you know, i don't expect her to live. i thought i'd give her a chance tho. i couldn't leave her out there during a mid winter night helpless. i think she might have gotten in the way of one of the parrots and seems to have lost an eye and she's not doing too well. i just want her to have a peaceful and safe place to die.
folks with faith, please send some love to this suffering lil creature. i've done all i can, but i don't have faith, so please pray for her suffering to be relieved either by death or healing. could you guys throw her in there with your other prayers (sorry i don't understand how the praying thing works)? if she is still alive in a day or so i'll take her to the vet but she hasn't moved. she's alive but she hasn't moved.
i call her patty, after a lady i used to know who i admired very much. please send pigeon patty some of your kind of love. thank you so much for your kind thoughts ♡

@Grumblesock @strongerthanyou it's always weird when people who presumably aren't religious ask for prayer like "so do you believe it'll do anything or you just want me to do something you presumably see as pointless?" i did pray for the poor bird, i suggest you give it a shot too, God loves all his creations.

@strongerthanyou Not at all hon. I've been there before with animals many times and will again and completely get where you are coming from.
The little I can do from here is pray and say thanks. My heart always goes out to people that treat animals right, and that sadly isn't always about scritches and cuddles. These bits of our relationship with animals are the seriously sucky bits.
I'm here off and on for most of the day now if you want to talk or update.

@strongerthanyou You've got mine. Poor thing. you're good to give it some comfort in its final time. If there's a chance of recovery then I'm rooting for that too but from you what said that's sounding very unlikely..
Sorry this sad duty has fallen to you. You're doing it right though, I think. Thank you for doing it, I know how much it sucks.

@Zealist @strongerthanyou Same. I believe we are called to, at best, responsible stewardship of life during our time here. There's so much cruelty done to His wonderful works that we need to do what we can to counterbalance this and exceed that, where we can.

@Dan_Hulson @UnityOstara @Grumblesock @strongerthanyou Guess I'm the opposite. Animals are just cool in general, and farm animals generally have absolutely great lives, and then they taste exquisite. Fun to take care of, and absolutely delicious to eat. The older I get the more I appreciate expertly prepared steaks, sausage, meat of all kinds

A small farm or backyard chicken has a ton of amazing days and one really really bad one. It lives safe from all kinds of predators and with a constant supply of clean water and good food with more variety than they'd ever encounter in the wild. I do respect people who choose to reduce meat consumption for moral reasons though.

@Dan_Hulson @strongerthanyou Is why i stick to fish, mostly, these days. though I like fish too as beings unto themselves I also find the tasty and have less of an issue killing and eating them than i do birds, mammals, etc.
It kind of highlights a few of my hypocritical moral grey areas.

@Grumblesock no, please, a.m.a. any time, i'll stop what i'm doing to answer you, friend. i know replying in such an amazing way wasn't a big deal to you but it was to me. kindness is not wasted on me, i never forget it.
pigeon patty is still with us! ♡ she's being looked after like a prize show dog.
she's not up and about yet, but i was sure that i was helping her pass on, and now i'm not sure about that! i've been keeping her warm & making sure she has food and water. the hospital bed i made for her is inside a kitty carrier (idk what the name is for those hard plastic cat carriers with the hinge metal door that's hard to open sometimes, like a travel cage?) and during the day, after i'd fed the birds outside, i would put the carrier right up to the window, so she could see her friends. she seemed to like that a lot. she would be up the front of the carrier and facing the window. otherwise she hasn't been moving much.
here's a groovy thing that i'm just lucky to have. the previous owners of this house had chickens, so there is a lovely good-sized, properly made, chicken coop out the back. it was a blessing for me because my housemate added a wire covered run to it, and turned it into an outdoor kitty enclosure. william kitty is a psychopath and i can't let him run free, not even during the day. he would eat every living thing within a 5km radius if i did. so he has his own outdoor enclosure with a run that goes out onto the lawn. he was a feral wildling when my housemate adopted him but he's a sookum baby these days, and only spends a few hours out there at a time cos he wants to be where i am. but it's so amazing that he has that space, and he isn't locked in the house 24/7. i'm so grateful for it. he goes to a certain door when he wants to go out there. so everyone is happy.
but william has lost his outdoor space for the moment because this afternoon i put patty out there to see how she goes. she is still in her hospital nest in the carrier, but the carrier door is open, and her food and water are just in front of it. i put a towel over the carrier for tonight to try to keep it a little warmer - or at least not as cold. when i went to check on her a few hours after i put her out there and she hadn't come out yet, but she was moving her head, checking it out. i wouldn't wanna leap straight out of that sweet nest i made her either!
sorry if this was too long winded but the good news is pigeon patty is in a safe spot and living like a queen. even tho she's not dancing (or eating much) yet, i'm happy for her as i didn't expect her to make it thru the first night ♡ ♡ ♡
i don't think she's out of the woods by any means, so it's still a wait and see situation, really. her legs aren't broken, her wings aren't broken - i'm just happy i can take care of her to see if she can make it ☻

@strongerthanyou Okay this is a far cooler story than I had first thought. Thanks for taking time out and letting me in on it all. Cats can be such murderous, lovable little bastards. I try not to hold it against them.
Seems your level of care is appropriate. Is she taking food/water at all?

@Grumblesock again, i feel emotional and humbled and comforted by reading your words. every word. you ever need anything you just tell me because i owe you a big favour.
i'm gonna leave her alone tonight. she's wild so i figure me trying to soothe her would be more traumatic than letting her be warm and safe and peaceful. i'm not gonna check until morning.
thank you for making me realise people are kind as well as everything else we all are. mostly i don't see much kindness to animals out there, so rn it's like feeling sun after a long winter ❤️

@strongerthanyou Not even, it's in 'the least I can do' category, I swear it.
Yeah in the main I tend to leave them warm and with water and food, enough should they are to take it with some checks every now and then when assured of as much comfort that you can afford them, though usually if an animal is dying they'll refuse food and drink. sounds like you've got all that sorted, nothing more to do.
You're in a good company up here as we're mostly animal lovers and have done these things many times so you aren't completely alone in this.❤️
