You can attach audio, video or photos to Mastodon posts. To do this click on the attachment logo (which is a paperclip 📎 on the web, apps will usually have a photo icon).
Attachments can be:
-Up to four PNG, JPG or GIF images of 8 megabytes
OR
-One MP4, M4V, MOV or WebM video of 40 megabytes
OR
-One MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, OPUS, AAC, M4A or 3GP audio file of 40 megabytes
There is no length limit on audio or video, only a file size limit. Remember to add text descriptions for attachments! 👍

I'm guessing there may be resoure issues for the admin, as they have to pay for the server's costs?
If you want to post long high quality videos I'd recommend using PeerTube instead. PeerTube accounts can be followed and interacted with from Mastodon, but PeerTube has a much better way of handling high bandwidth files.
For example @theatticdwellers is a PeerTube account, if you reply to its posts the replies will appear as comments below that video on PeerTube.

@feditips - Has there been any consideration to increase the MB file size for videos? It’s sometimes difficult to edit a video on a mobile phone when most tend to record in 4K/HD resolution.

You can embed a lot of media by just including the link, for example links to Bandcamp albums or YouTube videos will automatically turn into embedded players.
(Having said that, embedding may not happen on some apps, but it will work on the web interface.)

p.s. As @jherazob has just pointed out, an alternative way to get media into a post is to embed it from another site. You can do this by just including the link in your post, it will automatically turn into an embedded player.
For example, to include a YouTube video just include the video's web link in your post. This also works with Bandcamp, PeerTube etc.
It can take a while for it to turn into an embedded player, so try reloading your post after a few minutes.

Yes and no.
Mastodon accounts all have RSS feeds, and they can have audio attachments.
I don't know if podcast apps would interpret it as a podcast feed though, I'm guessing it would just see it as a text-based RSS feed.
PeerTube might work better?

It depends on the external site, but yes in general external sites are less good for privacy.

There's no setting in the graphical interface, but yes they are configurable. You would have to check with your instance admin to see if they've altered them.

@feditips I was looking to see if you can change the quality settings anywhere and it’s in the code for Mastodon itself. The docs haven’t been updated since December, not sure when it was changed, but the code definitely allows max 16 and 99MB now, and higher resolution too.

Wait, update on this, apparently the latest version of Mastodon does list WebP as a supported image type. I am not sure if it has been released yet.
The image file type list in the latest version is .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .webp .heic .heif .avif

@feditips The change was made in May and the current version 4.1.2 was released in April. Sorry for the confusion, I guess the sizes will increase in the next release!
