only one person answered my question about what would be considered "generic" cheese in your country. German. they said Edam.

@Bwasscher @thor Aged Edam is not generic Edam. =)
Actually I've never seen aged Edam, is it sold outside the Netherlands and Belgium?

@thor does blandness not have more to do with a lack of aging of the cheese. Medium or old edam is certainly more flavorfull.

it says something about the blandness of Scandinavian tastes that while i consider Edam not FAR from generic, it's still more aromatic than what passes for generic here.

Very soft and bland Gouda would be a close enough description of Hushållsost, but still not quite fair to the Gouda.
Beyond the super generic there's Grevé and Prästost. Grevé is a Swedish Emmentaler basically. Prästost I really don't know of an international comparison.

@clacke Gouda tastes a bit more buttery than our hvitost/gulost so it's not quite the same, but mild flavour profile and semi hard

@clacke is there something better known internationally that you could compare it to? i like to compare our hvitost or gulost to something like Gouda.
