Linux as a modern desktop OS is fundamentally worse, because it's worse at doing the jobs an OS is supposed to do: run software that is actually useful to me and run the hardware I want to use. You must understand that the OS is a means to an end, not the goal in and of itself. Linux is currently worse at performing both of those tasks - largely for reasons that have nothing to do with Linux itself - but that is actually not practically relevant because it's worse anyway. Software support is worse because software devs don't care about making Linux versions of their programs and hardware support is worse because hardware makers similarly don't really care about supporting desktop Linux, though with hardware on some distros the whole "free software" philosophy also gets in the way.
