this whole debacle on "users getting locked down because an instance goes down or awry" is the same issue of people putting all their eggs in the same basket, and it's not unique to fedi, either; it can happen to your email account, to your twitter/youtube/tiktok/whatever account, to your telegram/whatsapp/discord/etc. account, and on fedi (and xmpp) as well

you don't rely on a café existing to meet your friends, and you don't rely on that café to be your only way to contact them

ultimately, fedi is not meant to "grow a followership", it's social media first: it's meant to communicate with friends, people you know and talk to, to talk about yourself or something you're doing, discussing stuff like that; not to sell anything, and i think it's disingenuous to promise that to anyone that makes a living that way
