@bot there is a slot next to the door you have to put your key card into, and when and ONLY when it is in there, do the lights turn on. I guess it is to make you not forget your key and to save electricity when you leave.

@Moon @bot Protip: the card often cuts off all electricity in the room, if you want to run the AC so that it's nice and cool when you return, you can put any card in the slot, it's just a mechanical switch.

@Moon @bot almost all hotels in Europe and Asia work like this. At least those that give you keycards.
It sucks immensely because when you’re out, not just lights are out, but the outlets as well. You can’t just leave your laptop charging :akkowtf:
