@mangeurdenuage @ooignignoktoo It will never be the "year of the Linux desktop", as Linux is only a kernel and doesn't function on its own.
It was the year of the GNU/Linux desktop in 1995 or so, as you could finally use a computer again with only free software.
>hardware manufacturers won't be unts anymore
That'll never happen unless every potential buyer stopped buying and notify the seller that they will never buy anything from them unless they were to release any required drivers and/or runtime loadable software as free software (or at least provided adequate documentation for the programming of such) and hardware schematics documented well enough to allow for repairs.
>under a defacto free/libre license
A license is either free or nonfree, if you think you have a defacto free license, you should read it and determine if it's free or not.
>we also need decentralized financing
Already done as far as I am aware.
>ecosystem
>It is inadvisable to describe the free software community, or any human community, as an “ecosystem,” because that word implies the absence of ethical judgment.
>The term “ecosystem” implicitly suggests an attitude of nonjudgmental observation: don't ask how what should happen, just study and understand what does happen.

:gnu_interjection:
Fun aside the day that will happen hardware manufacturers won't be cunts anymore, firmwares and drivers will be under a defacto free/libre license, and we'll have schematics of the electronics.
But that won't happen as long as computer enthusiast continue to accept getting diddled.
And outside of that, we also need decentralized financing of the whole gnu/linux ecosystem.
