Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:09:42 JST Alex Gleason @meso Stop vacuuming and just put it back online. Then use pg_repack. Repack is faster than vacuum, you can do it online, and it will make your database work better. Guaranteed. https://gitlab.com/soapbox-pub/rebased/-/snippets/2463995 -

meso 🇺🇳 (meso@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:11:44 JST meso 🇺🇳 @alex I pruned remote posts older than 90 days, will repack reduce the filesize down to whatever it is without those posts? In conversation permalink -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:11:44 JST Alex Gleason @meso Yes. That's the purpose of Repack. It will essentially recreate your entire database, one table at a time. When it's working, new rows will write to both copies of the table. Then once the table is done, it will immediately switch over to it. In conversation permalink -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:15:31 JST Alex Gleason @meso @skylar There's basically no harm in trying since you're already down. If the repack fails, you continue using the old database. In conversation permalink -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:16:01 JST Alex Gleason @meso @skylar The main danger is that it fills up your disk and takes you offline. But you're already offline. In conversation permalink -

sapphire (sapphire@needs.vodka)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:19:05 JST sapphire @skylar @alex @meso vacuum is still useful but you don't need to do it offline/full unless you have issues. Pretty sure pleroma does it weekly on its own, but the online light succ is pretty necessary for postgres otherwise it'll just keep generating indices that go nowhere In conversation permalink Alex Gleason likes this. -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:20:12 JST Alex Gleason @meso @skylar Yes, but I think it won't fail. I haven't tried running it on a puny disk, though. In conversation permalink -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Thursday, 01-Jun-2023 10:36:35 JST Alex Gleason @meso @7666 @skylar You can run regular vacuum online. But it hardly does anything. Vacuum full needs to be run offline. That's what actually frees up disk space. You CAN run vacuum full concurrently online... but it will absolutely murder your CPU for 3 days straight and may not ever finish, making your site basically unusable even though it's "online" In conversation permalink
