   Some accounts use a "BOT" logo. This doesn't mean anything bad, it just means the account is posting in an automated way.

   Lots of bots are useful or entertaining. For example the bot @VoteChess runs chess games where people vote on the next move. You can find more useful bots listed by @FediFollows at https://fedi.directory/tag/bots/

   If you run a bot account, here's how to label it:

   1. Log in through your server's website
   2. Click "Edit profile"
   3. Tick "This is a bot account"
   4. Click "Save changes"

     If an account willingly self-flags as a bot, it's safe to say it's not acting underhanded. Spam bots would rather pretend to be a real user.

     Exactly. That's why the bot label exists, so that good honest bots can make clear that they're not trying to deceive anyone.

     Some users add the bot flag to their account... just because?

     I've seen quite a few non-bot bots

     I think some people use it to mean accounts where they post but don't monitor replies?

     I've seen that, but also seen it on accounts that do monitor and reply and otherwise seen like a normal account :ablobshrug:

     I don't think that's true any more, when the Twitter takeover happened they said they'd be more actively monitoring accounts.

     But bear in mind social media is probably not the best way to get feedback to an international organisation, or any large body. It's too open to manipulation by sockpuppets etc.

     This is a big deficiency of the #botFlag. As a user, I not only want to know whether an account is a bot or not, I want to know if the account is monitored & interactive. The EU commission has an unmonitored bot that simply mirrors their Twitter posts. I think they did not set the bot flag, so people reply thinking they’re actually giving feedback to the EU. There should really be 3 states: human, interactive bot, & announcement bot.
