Veilid is coming! Veilid is coming! :veilid:
Cult of the Dead Cow, the group whose members coined the term "hacktivism", sat for senate testimony in 1998, and took Microsoft down a peg with Back Orifice—some of the original People Who Do when it comes to exploring and highlighting security concerns—
those people came together with folks from right here at hackers.town (where, hey, several of them are community members) and others across the internet to create a new tool. What's it like?
Well, it launches soon. (At DefCon, no less, which is beyond fitting.) What we know so far:
- built with privacy in mind, especially thwarting scrapers and miners (a problem which frequently rears its head in the Fediverse as soon as some new doof sees the Mastodon API 🙄 )
- NOT built around a goddamn blockchain
- distributed & serverless
- open source
- designed to be an extendable framework
Maybe most importantly, it's designed by people who are here, have been here. People aware of the issues that keep popping up in the Fediverse. People who have seen our communities struggle to keep their members safe with imperfect tools.
I'm excited to see the new tool they created; feel it in my metaphorical hands, find unexpected ways to use it, unexpected ways it breaks. 😅 And to watch others using it, building on it, doing things I don't expect.
It's coming!
