    Decades have passed since the 1960s, yet the use of Indigenous American and First Nations names and images by sports teams continues to stir public debate. Mainstream media often simplifies the issue, framing it solely as a matter of offense to Indigenous individuals.

    However, this oversimplification disregards the tangible harm caused and dismisses the impact on non-Natives. Today, we delve into the true complexities surrounding Indigenous peoples as sports mascots in #TheBigPicture: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/strong-case-against-indigenous-mascots

      Why Are Indigenous Mascots Still A Thing?
      from George Takei
      Despite numerous national and international organizations decrying the harm caused by them, people still cling to racist Indigenous mascots for sports teams.

      @georgetakei I guess a civilized person has to ask why there is such a thing as a mascot, any kind of mascot. They certainly don't help sports teams win.

      I think anyone who thinks that a mascot honors the indigenous people it lampoons ought to have a rubber Jesus Christ bobblehead giving them the finger mounted next to any of the mascot symbols to properly honor THEIR religion in that same way.

      @georgetakei
      Thank you for talking about this issue. Also - some of the mascots representing groups that waged unimaginable campaigns of violent terror on Native people -- the Padres and '49ers come immediately to mind.

      @georgetakei thank you so much for this article. While I don't live in the US (I live in South Africa) it has shown me a different way to think about race, heritage and my reaction to the discourse.
