     @feditips I think a helpful analogy is that Twitter uses a phone number, the Fediverse uses an area code plus the phone number...

     The link to a Mastodon server's About page is labelled "Learn More" on the desktop website and "⋯" on the mobile website.

     Other platforms may use different names for this.

     @feditips Is there any way to see all the posts containing a particular hashtag? I seem to only be able to see a very small subset when I search, even though I know there are posts on other servers that mine is federated with.

     Servers federate with specific users rather than entire other servers.

     So, if a user isn't followed or interacted with by anyone on your server, and your server doesn't subscribe to any relays, then their posts won't show up. (More info: https://fedi.tips/which-posts-and-accounts-can-i-see-from-my-server/)

     A couple of workarounds:

     -Ask your admin about topic-based relays such as https://relay.fedi.buzz

     -Follow groups on your topics, these actively push content to your server (more info: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/).

     Hashtags are passive, you only see posts with that tag which have federated to your server anyway (because someone followed their author, or saw the post shared by someone, or it showed up on a relay that your server uses).

     Groups are active, they send all their content to all their members on every server, no matter who they federate with.

     If you want to see 100% of content on a particular topic, I'd strongly recommend using groups (https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse)

     Can i just confirm: does this apply to hashtags too? ie, if you out a hashtag into your searchbox, only posts with the hashtag that have connections show up? I am in a similar situation to @DrKathyChandler as i “run” #ClimateDiary and always thought i was able to see all posts using the hashtag

     The idea of this place is to be decentralised, partly in order to avoid Elon Musk scenarios and many other reasons (https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/).

     There is no central index of the entire Fediverse, partly because whoever controlled that would control this place, partly because who would decide what it indexes? Also, many here don't want to be indexed.

     @feditips @DrKathyChandler yes, but i imagine that too only captures people somehow linked to a group? That does not seem more far-reaching to me than hashtags, but maybe i am misunderstanding something. It does seem a bit of a shame that there is no way of searching/reaching/linking the whole fediverse. I guess you have to follow the second you see something interesting from a new server, and just expand your own reach that way

     You don't have to choose between tags and groups by the way, you can use both on the same posts.

     If you're having trouble with your server not noticing much of the Fediverse, that's what relays are there to help with.

     The latest relays can be topic-specific, so if your admin is nervous about relays using lots of resources you can suggest they follow relays for particular topics (e.g. https://relay.fedi.buzz/).

     Thank you, and sorry, I didn’t mean to be reproachful - just figuring it all out. Explains why it’s quite hard to diversify your world on here but i will keep on trying. The strategy i have been using is to regularly search different country hashtags - the fact that i am not seeing everything explains why so little comes up.
