  They started adding ads soon after GOOG bought them IIRC, but they were literally just a little text banner that you could click away.

  I've never experienced youtube when it was good, I've seen a video about it though.
  there were DMs, a rating system with stars, extremely customizable profile pages, no ads afaik, no algorithm
