Folks migrated new development away from COBOL •and• made COBOL phase out GO TO in favor of structured programming. Heck, they made COBOL object-oriented in the late 90s.
The same two-pronged approach — replace •and• improve — is one to take with memory unsafe languages.

  A large amount of the worlds code is written in C, and gating platform safety and security on "rewrite everything in a new language" is simply not practical.   Major brownie points for mentioning Autocode and Shortcode as early programming langs. Those weren't ones I knew, I'm gonna go learn about them 😃
