remember: when you sleep and you see pictures, those pictures are a COLLAGE of OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK. you STOLE their work and they starve because of you.

@anakita yeah it's not stealing in any case. nobody loses anything and so on…
but calling what generative AI "a collage" is also complete nonsense in the technical sense…
@lain or what they think their bottom line is, anyway… there's a lot of "class interest" thinking at work, i think.
but it's kinda blatant at times "of course _artists_ should have access to AI tools!", and suddenly the inspiration from other people's work doesn't seem to be in the equation anymore. i sure hope i'll qualify for an artist license in time or the'll steal all my pencils 😬.
@anakita what is what in an sense? are you saying training generative models is stealing. not that stealing is always a bad thing…
as for "AI being BS", well in the last two years or so transformers alone basically mastered natural language understanding, translation, speech recognition and synthesis, and they're making pretty big leaps in terms of common sense, reasoning, and expert domain understanding.
you think that stuff is gonna slow down? whatcha betting 😏?
@murilove i don't think much of the data is stolen. probably some of it comes from government surveillance or something, but most of it was published to be publicly accessible.
there seems to be some outrage about scraping public data which i seems super bizarre to me. downloading files is pretty much how the entire web works since forever.
but yeah, i guess i'm not sure what exactly you mean by stealing here… sorry if it feels like i'm being obtuse.
@sofia Woah, did you just compare dreaming with generating images with a neural network trained by evil corp? That's a dangerous stretch, don't you think?
I agree with throwing rocks at copyright cops and everything is a remix, but the way I read it felt like a suggestion that AI is not actually stealing data, which is concerning.
Feels like comparing planting the seeds from the fruit you ate with large scale mono-culture of transgenic seeds. 👀
@lain please don't jump to conclusions.
@lain i guess you called it, though 😅.
