I have this lucky quirk that I already go by my middle name and my legal first name is purely a bureaucratic thing. So, I can "unofficially" make my new and gender-nonspecific name take the place of that name. My loved ones can call me my middle name like they always have, as I have no issued with my name but just want a gender-neutral first name to help "protect" me a bit.

@Tattie @ActuallyAnnalise @Terra @Tweetfiction This relates to my me not using "deadname" for myself. I don't mind mine. It's an uncommon girl's name too (so was my middle name somehow), and I plan to keep it as my new middle name. It just wasn't affirming enough to use as a first name.
I tend to call my old first name my "assigned name". I like the sound of "given name" more, but the way that term is usually used on forms, etc. means it would apply to my new chosen name as well.

@ActuallyAnnalise yes, Mae made the artistic choice to change her signature to her chosen name in the final comic of the sequence, which just made me sob with joy.
Generally she's ok with her birth name being out there and on old comics.

@Terra @Tweetfiction I really debated whether to cut that out or not and ultimately came down on the side of leaving the attribution in the crop on the theory that, in the absence of knowledge to the contrary, I should assume that Mae was deliberate in her choice to leave that name attached to the comic as it currently is on her website.

@Tweetfiction Oh, I'm there too. I mean, I felt "more natural" around girls, but I was not "comfortable" because I knew I wasn't girl enough and was therefore constantly worried about breaking the magic.

@Terra Maybe ONE exception for me...I'm never comfortable around anybody. Hell, it took finally coming out as trans to my wife to make me comfortable around her, and we've been together for 18 years!
