last time i tried wayland, there was too much jank and i had to retreat back to deprecated ol' xorg

tried it again today because of this toot: https://social.treehouse.systems/@marcan/110354752073927669

... and things are working quite well! glmark2-wayland is using my gpu on a portrait-mode 2nd screen in sway, and is super smooth

time to make a checklist of the things i need to work in order for me to abandon xorg forever! the time is nigh!

Also, if you have this idea that "Wayland can't do $foo" and you haven't checked again in the past 6 months, there's a good chance you're wrong. Seriously, a *bunch* of stuff has been improving and getting fixed over the past year especially.

@pho4cexa I know people keep saying this isn't like pulse, and I get that it's not like pulse in that the people making the new thing are actually the same people who made the old thing

but the more I read about and encounter these broken things, the more it feels like pulse

gradually getting https://swaywm.org configured but i think i've already been snagged by a (known, reported) bug around mouse button mapping

i need my weird ass button map before i can go full wayland

hmm, maybe i can fix it, and submit a patch?

if not, i heard there's a way to manipulate the button-map using udev rules, but haven't tracked down details

think i'll try on a few more compositors first

compiz was a whizzy thing that enticed a lot of new people to try on linux back the mid '00s

linux was already my primary desktop by then but i never managed to get compiz working with my hardware. didn't even have smooth 2d desktop transitions. i wanted my tiling wm and switching desktops has always been a smash cut

so i'm pretty tickled that https://wayfire.org exists and works on my machine. finally i can spin my desktops on a cube and burn down my windows

@pho4cexa yeah, I mean it's all little things, but the little things really add up

every year or so I go check again to see whether the accessibility features I need have been added to wayland, and most of the time the answer I get is "why on earth would you want THAT" so I'd have to be fairly desperate at this point to consider switching

@technomancy i mean... this bit is barely broken. anybody who doesn't need to swap button 3 for 8 on their mouse probably doesn't notice it, and it's only broken for the button-release, not the button-press, so it's not like nobody bothered to implement the feature

and my experience with pulseaudio and pipewire and systemd and wayland and printers and many other things that linux nerds go rabid about has been, if not positive, then at least continually improving 🤷

@pho4cexa for me it's the ability to remap keys

it used to be in firefox you could write an extension which would convert like, ctrl-n to down-arrow and ctrl-p to up arrow, etc, but now extensions are banned from doing that so if you hold down those keys you just get like ... twenty seven new windows or fifteen print dialog boxes or whatever

anyway my current xorg WM handles this brilliantly and moving to another system lacking that feature isn't really viable for me

I haven't spent enough time with wayland to know if there are other blockers for me because it only takes about 20 minutes of using the system without that feature for me to be ready to launch my laptop out the window

@technomancy oof yeah totally fair. accessibility is still a sore spot and if that's the reaction you get i can see why you're unenthusiastic about the idea

just curious, what missing features are most egregious for you? i've certainly got my own punchlist i'm working through
