@edendestroyer@hakan_geijer Google's a massive company. Proton isn't as big, but is getting bigger. Both will keep shit secure, but both operate their services in accordance with laws. Google are evil wankers who I wouldn't willingly give any of my data or a dime of my money; Proton are absolute saints by comparison who I have paid for. So I agree: folks must do their own research, make informed choices, and heck, there's always Riseup too: small yes, but principled, with massive effort on minimal resources, and a surprisingly fun range of services we all too often forget about.
@edendestroyer@hakan_geijer Unfortunately companies offering services exist on the basis of compliance with the law. All of them. Still, some are better than others and are more privacy/security-minded. Only Riseup, I believe, have threatened to sacrifice their service itself to protect users. I guess, as they're a collective, they're in a better position to do so. So if it's some insurrection shit folks are doing against oppressive regimes, that'll probably be a better option.
