People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse.

But a meme is just a meme.

In the real world, Linux dominates.

Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux.

    Chromebook? Linux.

Windows has a Linux Subsystem too.

    Linux has won.

The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it.

The Fediverse should be so lucky.

Truth be told, the Linux paradigm probably will be what becomes of the Fediverse.

What will happen is that most people will use the thing that gives them familiarity and comfort.

      Which is fine.

But soon we’ll see the Fediverse begin to unlock things we didn’t think possible.

Weather trackers will use it. So will video games. It will be used on millions of websites.

Most people won’t know because it will simply power *everything*.

@atomicpoet To be fair, Chrome OS and Android Laptops / Boxes are "Linux on the Desktop", except commercially successful and more easily usable due to their "turn it on and it works" setup.

The Steam Deck's OS might also be another example of that soon. Heard it uses KDE or something?

@atomicpoet Hell even macos is a close, highly hardware-tuned linux relative (unix) with an unmitigated UIX disaster slapped on top.

@atomicpoet I think you’re overestimating Android’s market share. Either that or classifying any UNIX as Linux.

@atomicpoet @briankrebs this is the same as RSS. Everything runs on RSS behind the scenes, we just don’t realize it.

@atomicpoet 💯 that was my first read when I finally "got" mastodon, it really could be the linux of social networks, long tail and slow steady growth

@atomicpoet as usual parts of our field contain people that have the need to hype certain parts of it. AI. ML. LLM. Rules. Functional programming. All. Hype.

Sometimes I think it is their business model. Oh well.

@atomicpoet Did you really leave out cloud servers? AWS, GC, Azure, DigitalOcean, ... and many others are Linux by default and the vast majority of operating systems in use. People are using Linux in mass quantities every day from Windows clients, and they have no idea why the Internet runs so smoothly.
