I’ve known this for awhile: the reason Twitter funded Bluesky is because they were sick and tired of being held liable for all the kinds of crap that gets posted to their platform.

Twitter no longer wanted to be in the publishing business. They wanted to be in the algorithm business.

How to do this? Force people to host their own content.

@Jdreben Well, I’m saying “user” very generally. The point is, they don’t want to be publishers. That’s the point of the PDS.

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social I don't think they really want users to host their own content though. They want other businesses to. Idk

Think about it from a social media perspective.

Is it better to be a publisher who’s held liable for content that you don’t want to moderate?

Or is it better to be the service that pretty much says, “Hey, we have nothing to do with what the what that server is about but here’s a link nevertheless?”

Ask Alphabet, the company behind Google.

@Sbectol That’s a lot of money to save if you don’t hire moderators

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social also there's the legal stuff. You don't have to have a big team of moderators if you aren't responsible for content

@atomicpoet Well, they killed G+, which IMO, was the best platform I ever used. Looking forward to groups on Mastodon!
