@Mastodon this seems awesome to me, I really fail to see how this would restrict or harm decentralization but I expect to see a lot of that argument being thrown around in the next few days.
@Mastodon Someone basically read all my mastodon complaints for the last couple of months and acted on them. You guys are doing great! Thank you for the continuous improvements!!!
@Mastodon this is all very good news, I’m happy to see work continuing to improve the Mastodon experience. Anything that helps with onboarding is a good thing 😊
@Mastodon I actually find this measured and reasonable, in content and form. I do understand the concerns re too much centralisation but it’s still possible to choose another server on the app. People who can’t be bothered will of course choose the default but they would do so anyway (or drop from the process). Also, why all this criticism about the corporate tone? Professional communication is important and key to grow the user base beyond the enthusiast gang.
@Mastodon Quotes are a nice to have thing as you actually get to see context without clicking a link, but search is a huge deal for me. Right now, there's no way I can still easily find some of my own older posts to reference them later... so thanks for this!
@Mastodon Will users be able to opt out of search, so that they can choose to make individual posts searchable with hashtags? I was quite enjoying having a lower profile here than on the other platforms.
@Mastodon I hope that the those tools have robust personal controls so that people can protect themselves, their privacy and customize their experience.
Mastodon's chief strength for quality of life is the battery of mute, blocking and follower controls.
@Mastodon I'm optimistic that quote posting will at least be better here than on twitter due to moderation. I'm not in favor but I understand why people are. Hopefully it's good.
That said, I feel like there could be a better way than this form of centralization. Being able to choose a community is the best aspect of Mastodon and this obstructs that.
I forget who said it in the replies but maybe having a questionnaire suggest a server based on interests or something would be better.
@solarbear@Mastodon This ship has already sailed, for better or for worse—quote posts have already been implemented in most of the top-end third party apps, and there's little Mastodon can do about it other than follow suit. E.g., here's how Phanpy.social shows QTs:
@Mastodon please no quote posts. One of mastodons greats strengths is that it encourages interaction over attention seeking. Quote posts are a massive step backwards.
@pabloscloud I can assure you that back in the day before Mastodon when we had groups, there were still different servers.
We even had groups intended for the users of one server, to strengthen the ties of that community, as there was no Local Timeline on GNU Social, and there still isn't to this day.
To correct myself: There have been groups all along, ones that Mastodon can use too, you just couldn't create them in Mastodon itself.
@Mastodon I am still wondering.. What are groups? Like someone can create a group and others can join? Cause that would basically make instances useless and even push centralization more than recommending the mastodon.social instance imo
@Mastodon You guys are doing a good work, love the interface, but try to fix the automatic scrolling on the federated feed, because when someone wants it to stop so they can read through what people are posting on the platform, it doesnt stop, just keeps moving. #mastodon
@Mastodon Fantastic news, but when I go to joinmastodon.org and click "Create Account" it still takes me to a long list of servers. Is the change just that mastodon.social is the first one listed?
If that's it, I suspect most people will still be confused. I figured "Create Account" would immediately ask you for a Username/Password but also have a "choose another server" option as well. Or has the change not gone live yet?
@Mastodon Hi, thanks for the news and the work and sorry to bother: wasn't quote posts' absence an intentional feature not a bug?, I have kind of a recollection in that sense... Thanks a lot.
Quote posts already exist, they're called screenshots and links. If people were going to harass others with quote posts, then they already are now. However screenshots are prone to being doctored, and links are horrible for accessibility. Generally both are a dumb idea when the Fediverse is kinda made for this.
Quote posts can only be an upgrade, bringing Mastodon up to the other Fediverse apps
