It's painful watching so many nerds wonder why people are flocking to Blue Sky while shitting on things like being able to respond to messages with quotes, people who have large followings, UX that makes signing up easy for non-techies etc.
@BlackAzizAnansi The technical stuff aside. The thing that scared me are the reports of brutal levels of racism happening directly to new users.
If you just joined, are trying to figure things out, aren’t a technical person (if you are, be a bit humble and helpful), and the first thing you experience is “I’m going to fucking kill you!”… yeah “just block” doesn’t cut it.
I would have deleted my account right there and then.
@BlackAzizAnansi I came late & "QTs cause toxicity" was already well established as "fact". There's actually a fair body of research that says it's not true (see https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/01/12/quote-tweeting-over-30-studies-dispel-some-myths/ ), largely dismissed as not in line with people's lived experience. Obviously, as you and others have said, it's deeply troubling that when Black users say QTs are an essential tool to fight toxicity rather than the reverse, *that* lived experience is dismissed.
@BlackAzizAnansi It was a bit amusing to me how much this mirrors some internal discussions I have had in the workplace - The importance of simplicity in execution and structure to a good UX cannot be overstated. Even in apps that are mandatory for their users to do their work (like the ones I work on) we get adoption issues when our UX is not what it should be. Hard lesson to learn.
