łopatologia (lopatto@mastodon.xyz)'s status on Saturday, 29-Apr-2023 17:22:39 JST łopatologia @chrismessina @CalmlyBallistic I do think this interaction and some of the other replies to your tweet kinda get at what I'm saying here, Chris. playfulness, hyperbole, and fun are discouraged, even penalized, on mastodon.
most non-tech industry people just get on social media to goof around. take away the goofs, and you take away the appeal.

Thomas Kitchens (calmlyballistic@theatl.social)'s status on Saturday, 29-Apr-2023 17:22:51 JST Thomas Kitchens @chrismessina @lopatto I don't feel like I'm impugning their character given your selected text from the article. "I just need someone to give me some invites so I can help make it worse" sounds very aware of how their behavior affects the ecosystem.

Thomas Kitchens (calmlyballistic@theatl.social)'s status on Saturday, 29-Apr-2023 17:22:59 JST Thomas Kitchens @chrismessina Reddit has designated places for people to gawk and fuck around. AITA and subredditdrama are good examples. But you've also got places like /r/WholesomeMemes where that shit isn't tolerated. The soft barrier of subreddits makes it easier for everyone to have a good time. The lack of those barriers is bad when people like Lopatto show up.

Chris Messina (chrismessina@mastodon.xyz)'s status on Saturday, 29-Apr-2023 17:22:59 JST Chris Messina @CalmlyBallistic I wouldn't impugn @lopatto's character without evidence (but that's just me). The strength and resiliency of the social web *should* be that it allows for all kinds of different spaces to exist — some that are safe for most people and some that are definitely not.
The Mastodon network isn't monolithic and shouldn't be, and to @lopatto's point — the default Mastodon.social does give a rather stuffy vibe, perhaps in response to the rough and tumble or the Twittersphere.
