   Hey there followers!

   Just to let you know, I usually reply to questions on this account as private messages because I don't want to spam my followers' timelines with lots of replies.

   Unfortunately, even Unlisted posts seem to appear in the Home timelines of followers, so I use Mentioned visibility instead (which is basically a DM).

   Please don't think I'm being weird if I reply to you privately!

     p.s. To be honest I am still having trouble nailing down how Unlisted is supposed to work. It isn't documented fully.

     I assumed it would never show up in Home timelines unless it was boosted, but I've seen unboosted Unlisted replies to conversations I wasn't taking part in.

     If someone can point to proper full documentation for Unlisted including its behaviour in Home timelines, that would be fantastic.

     p.p.s. Okay, thank you to everyone who replied about this.

     Just did a few more tests and Unlisted seems to work like this in Home:

     -Unlisted posts (not replies) from people you follow are always visible

     -Unlisted replies from people you follow which are sent to people you also follow ARE visible

     -Unlisted replies from people you follow which are sent to people you don't follow ARE NOT visible

     ...so... yeah... this is not the most intuitive setup, but seems to be how Unlisted works on Home!

     You can see other instances (AKA servers), for example you and I are on different servers but we're having this conversation right now.

     Most of the people you interact with will be on different servers. You can tell which server they're on by looking at the last part of their account addresses: https://fedi.tips/whats-my-accounts-address-how-do-i-follow-other-peoples-addresses-how-can-people-follow-my-address/

     You can only log in on the server you belong to, but the servers talk to each other so you can follow and interact with people from other servers.

     @feditips So I'm a little on clear how this Fediverse thing works... can I not see other instances of Mastadon? I thought it was all interlinked? I ask because I went to Mastadon.org.uk and I see there that my logins arent valid?

     The network structure on here is similar to email.

     If you use Gmail your login will only let you log in on Gmail, but you can still send and receive emails from other email providers like Yahoo Mail, Outlook, Tutanota etc.
