   I found my car battery had died, parked in a somewhat rough part of town. I stood beside it with jumper cables in my hand, and tried to catch the eye of folks passing by in their cars. Most wouldn't look at me.

   Then a fellow in a van stopped and said, "Need a jump?"... and he helped me out.

   I thanked him and offered him a few bucks afterwards. He said, "No way, buddy — just pay it forward!"

   That was 35 years ago.

   I still remember him. ❤️

     @bodhidave @J3Words It all happened so quickly and efficiently that we we were too surprised to even say „thank you“ before he disappeared. He did it so matter-of-factly that we briefly speculated whether the tourist board employed him expressly to wipe benches for tourists. It was a sweet thing to do and he is still fondly remembered in our family.

     @bodhidave @J3Words My dad and I were being tourists in Chester, UK, on a particularly showery day about 25 years ago. We had bought sandwiches for lunch and were eyeing up a bench to sit down and eat them, but discovered it was dripping wet. I pulled out a pocket handkerchief but realised it would never suffice. At that moment a motor scooter pulled up, the driver got off, produced a towel from under his saddle and dried the bench, then stowed the towel away and drove off.

     @bodhidave @J3Words when I was a kid my mum took us out downtown to have breakfast. I wasn't used to go out and I ate so fast that some food stuck on my throat and I was choking. A stranger came from nowhere, performed a Hemlich maneuver on me and saved my life. Mum told me later I was turning blue when that person came. Everything happened so fast that we didn't get to thank the person. It was about 30 years ago.
