I moved to Mastodon.social
A journalist just asked to talk to me about my comments about Mastodon. I'll reveal who and the piece she writes when it comes out.
Meanwhile, the same publication said this last year:
"But Mastodon’s model comes with its own risks. If the server you join disappears, you could lose everything, just like if your email provider shut down."
Is that true, or can you move first?
Adding: I'd think the reputable admins should never do that, but can they?

It is very disingenuous of that journalist to claim this was a risk specific to Mastodon.
ANY online service can delete your content without warning.
This happens to people on Google who inexplicably lose access to their Gmail or YouTube accounts, for example. And there's usually no appeal or recourse.
Even the biggest social networks in the world that have received billions in funding can lose all their content by accident:

I would say Mastodon gives you MORE protection from losing data, not less.
You can set up your own server for approx US$10 a month without technical knowledge or equipment, and then you will be the one who decides when it shuts down.
This option simply doesn't exist on centralised services like Twitter, Google, Facebook etc. They are making you entirely dependent on them, and at their mercy.
On Mastodon and the Fediverse, you can take control for yourself.
