   I genuinely miss menus and colorful, descriptive icons like this. Was this called skeuomorphic design?

     Not quite.
     Skeuomorphism is relying on things from the analogue world (desktop, trashbin, folders etc) as metaphors for digital items.

     You might want to look into neomorphism.
