But once you've got those knee pads, I'm sure you know there are falling techniques that'll help ensure your kneepads do most of the work so you're less likely to take it on your hip or other unprotected places.

Rae (vk2gpu@mastodon.radio)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 00:08:36 JST Rae @roadriverrail Just don't look at my knees.... no pads on there yet. BUT I do have some S1 knee pads ordered! Only injury tonight ended up being from falling over coming home, grazed my hip. Where there will not be anything more than clothing protecting me -_-

Kit Rhett Aultman (roadriverrail@signs.codes)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 00:21:30 JST Kit Rhett Aultman @vk2gpu Mind you, I'm a pretty risk averse skater, but even after a couple of seasons reffing roller derby, I pick my street skating routes with extreme care. Those are environments where you have to have a mix of skills to adapt to whatever it is that's happening. And street skating always includes at least a little bit of going downhill, which is definitely the hardest thing to deal with in my experience.

Rae (vk2gpu@mastodon.radio)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 00:21:31 JST Rae @roadriverrail Yeah, I'll be reading up on the techniques once I have the pads! And I'll hold off on the skating home from the station for a bit... that route is a little bit advanced for me it seems :)

Kit Rhett Aultman (roadriverrail@signs.codes)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 00:35:32 JST Kit Rhett Aultman @vk2gpu That is definitely an achievable goal. There's a checklist of skills you need to get it, and sharp downhill inclines still require special handling, but with practice and a good set of outdoor wheels, it can be done. I'll stop with the 'splaining now but if you ever need a hand with anything, LMK. I teach one of the skills classes in my league, so I have a good sense of it.

Rae (vk2gpu@mastodon.radio)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2023 00:35:33 JST Rae @roadriverrail Ideally I want to be good enough to just be able to toddle off on the skates anywhere I could walking (that is somewhat paved!). But I do want to go have some fun at a skate park some time.. got a lot of basics to cover long before then.
