     i don't want a chap app built into the browser. Hell I don't even want to be communicating with social media through a browser. If it were up to me, we'd still be using something like mozilla firefox 1.x / dillo / elinks which, imho is where browsers had their peak /oldmangrumbling

     That’s a good thing actually, given that a chat app built into the browser might want to offer a selection of one or more audio inputs or outputs. Discord does this I think

     I guess an app might want to enable multiple cameras as well, so that’s why chrome browser needs to be able to detect usb connections and disconnects

     netscape was ok in its early versions
     something went horribly wrong by like netscape 6.x though.
     
     i suspect most of what went wrong was "microsoft" though it's possible "AOL/TimeWarner/RIAA" was a lot of it too.

     Was centericq a port of ICQ? That was my first chat program back in the day (probably before mIRC), and it had one feature that I absolutely loved that none of the others did - the ability to drag a name off the list window and have it float wherever you wanted it.

     it was originally but it was a libpurple frontend so you could use it for whatever protocol you wanted.
     
     I used it to communicate with people via xmpp/jabber / so could communicate with all my livejournal/facebook/google/other jabber contacts as well as #QQ
