This story of the US, UK, and Australia ripping out Chinese-made surveillance cameras is a perfect illustration of the utter stupidity of the way digital technology has been deployed over the last few decades:

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Sunday, 19-Feb-2023 14:34:25 JST Strypey So either security professionals have been installing surveillance cameras in sensitive government facilities, designed and manufactured by companies headquartered in another country, without checking whether the cameras can send data to third parties like the manufacturers or their governments. Or they have performed the basic security checks you'd expect before buying cameras, to make sure they don't try to connect to external networks, and someone is lying about why they want them gone.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Sunday, 19-Feb-2023 14:34:27 JST Strypey The national security panic about cameras made in China results from a convergence of a series of questionable practices. Firstly, proprietary hardware and software whose operations can't be independently audited. Then there's the outsourcing of technology development and manufacturing to the lowest bidder, anywhere in the world. Finally, even organisations procuring security equipment for use in highly sensitive environments like defence bases have followed these practices.

(my homeland, before anyone accuses me of 'anti-US' sentiment. There're many reasons I'm grateful I was allowed to make Aotearoa NZ my home).
