   @NEETzsche @marine @pernia @cvnt @netdoll @errante @book I am getting to that point. as of right now I have no one blocked or muted. I only blocked one guy the "dan_hulson" guy for being British and annoying me. but I unblocked him after like 3 days.
   
   I'm on the fence, I have been on fedi for 4ish months and I have never really blocked anyone. its like a weird rule i made for myself no blocking people. so I'm thinking of either breaking that self imposed rule or just sticking with it.

     @CentaurBreeder It's an idea that's very 2016. The idea is that if you block somebody you can see their point. That makes sense when you're dealing with people who don't want to acknowledge real and important things that you have to say and prefer these shut it down type tactics.
     
     But where that runs afoul is when you deal with people who exploit this restraint to rope you into NeverEnding bickering about nothing. And after a certain point it becomes about nothing. You start bickering about one thing and they won't let go. Then, over the course of days, weeks, months, or occasionally years, they accumulate this dossier of everything you've said or done. Then they edit all of the good things you've done out of that dossier and stress all of the bad things that you've done. What they create is the most parsimonious and malicious interpretation of the facts of your overall character.
     
     There's an entire culture that is emerged around this behavior and the expectation is that you produce your own dossier and obsessively stalk and sift the opponents history of misbehavior. And whoever misbehaved more, loses. Whoever is more flawed as a person is the one who ultimately needs to take the L. It's very tempting to engage in this culture because it's fun to judge people and painful to be judged by other people.
     
     But that temptation runs out and it gets boring after a while. After a certain point you just don't care what these people have to say anymore. Especially after it gets so repetitive and your sins are so minor relative to whoever else. In my case, the thing they had on me is that I'm a big fat guy. But that one little thing was enough to keep them going for about a year. Imagine if I had a wet fart on livestream or something. Something like that, while embarrassing, in the past would have been brushed over in a matter of days, less than a week. But with this culture, I could cure fucking cancer and these people would reduce me to my wet fart.
     
     Once you've reached this point, the answer to this sort of e-drama is simple. You click mute.

     @book I've come to the same conclusion. It's totally reasonable to block people or mute them if they are annoying and unoriginal enough. For this reason I've muted quite a few people at this point. A couple entire instances.
