This isn't an original thought, but I think we need reminding now and then: #smartphones suck at being phones. They're not particularly good at being #computers either, because convergence is really difficult or some such lame excuse. Younger generations use them mostly for texting. They've managed to make themselves useful(?) for security stuff, like Authy, but it's not like that was ever a critical necessity. They make a lot of #ewaste. So why do we have these fucking things?

Handhelds* are something humankind was dreaming about. You can see countless references to these things not even just in sci-fi but in old fairytales. And no, for certain purposes they do not suck. They are excellent communicators. They literally land the knowledge of the world in your palm. They can take pictures and videos which has countless purposes. They can hold immense amount of data even offline like having rather detailed maps of the most known areas of the planet and they can navigate you around it.
It is a shame what we let corporations do with our dream though - this is true. Maybe this is what we should focus on instead of trying to dismiss something countless people dreamed of and find necessary part of their life now.
