For all the people out there — politicians, pundits, prosecutors, all of them — breathing a sigh of relief because Trump appears to be politically doomed anyway, so no need to go after him any more…

For all those people, I will say this again, very slowly:

There are a whole lot of would-be authoritarians out there

who are not nearly as stupid as Trump

and are watching Trump very carefully:

not whether he succeeds in toppling our democracy,

but what ••price he pays•• for trying.

@DrewKadel I see no reason to think that a primary loss, or any specific electoral outcome, would “take them all down.” The thing that consistently shuts fascists down is the certainty of personal ruin.

@inthehands But the key is to stand up and speak out against all the authoritarian actors and actions. Trump staying in the 2024 primary and losing would likely take them all down, given Trump's propensity to lash out when he loses.

For the anti-line-break crowd, here it is in a tidy paragraph:

There are a whole lot of would-be authoritarians out there who are not nearly as stupid as Trump, and who are watching Trump very carefully: not whether he succeeds in toppling our democracy, but what price he pays for trying.

So what price will he pay? I’m a broken record. Going to keep repeating it.
