@Doll @Darb In fairness, when used at the proper doses, the cocaine drops and amphetamine pills worked better than anything else.
Unexpected side effects of making 6-year old cocaine addicts and house wives hopped up on speed were unfortunate.

@swattysquad @Darb @Doll Good point. A number of soft drinks originated as medicines, which were developed by pharmacists. The soda parlors were usually in pharmacies. They were soft because they had no alcohol, but you never knew what else was in it.

@Doll @Darb And Cocaine was sold as a miracle pain killer and an aid to help focus. All true statements. People just didn't appreciate the concept of how addicting cocaine and amphetamines were and the long term impacts. A lot of people had no clue what they were taking.
Heck, the grandmothers pushing prohibition in the early 1900's all left the temperance meeting and went home to have some of their medical tonic which was like 50 proof alcohol because it did wonders for their health and feelings. They had no clue what was in it.

True. As this advertisement clearly states: 'it gives you the energy to carry on working throughout the night!' Very helpful... in the short term.
