instead of teaching kids how to program we need to teach them how to be sysadmins so they can host their own minecraft servers and mumble servers and fediverse servers.

@hckr @whiteline javascript is great because the browser is a self contained environment for a language that has styled text, UI elements, audio synthesis, 2d and 3d graphics

@Moon it's because we don't teach SICP and Scheme anymore, and instead teach JS and HTML/DOM silly ass bullshit.

they need hygienic macros and recursion to properly develop their minds

@hckr @Moon SICP is so rigorous that the authors thought it was too much for gifted entry-level college students in ivy league universities and that part of the material might be taught as a course.

I love scheme and it's a good teaching language because it's extremely minimal but JS has developed to the point that it's actually a very appropriate language to teach concepts in and unlike scheme you can easily create fun stuff in it that can easily be shared with others.

@Moon I don't think kids are capable of administrative thought, in a certain sense. it's far easier to teach the problem solving necessary to program. to administrate, you have to have a business/operation plan, policies in place, a sense of operational and organizational order/discipline. it's really quite complex, if done properly. i think Minecraft created Realms to address exactly that. they drop the admin parts into the game ui itself, and they can switch gamemodes and do fun game things without having to "java -jar xMs1024M" and all that jazz

@hckr in practice even teaching kids programming is teaching them heuristics not really teaching them systematic thought. in the same sense, sysadmin isn't all that philosophical, it's accumulating instructions on how to get a program on your server running (even if it's not the ideal way)

@bot Stealing is wrong, so is theft and murder with the assistance of a boat.

Unauthorized copying is not stealing and it's usually not wrong, as sharing is a good thing (unless what you happen to be "sharing" takes away ones freedom, like proprietary software).

@lebronjames76 >it means learning the basics of hosting stuff must happen through external servers
I would recommend using Tor onion services - you can host anything you want even with 8 layers of NATs - as you just gotta set up a Unix socket onion service and bind nginx to the socket.

Tor only does TCP unfortunately, which is fine for things like webservers, but won't work for game servers that use UDP signalling.

If latency is a issue, you can always turn on single hop mode and if you don't care about anonymity, set the client to use only 1 hop as well.

@Moon since port forwarding is now a impossibility in most homes, it means learning the basics of hosting stuff must happen through external servers which cost money which kids obviously are not going to have and also adds another layer of difficulty to understand at first
