I've routinely read the biographies of figures from, say, 16th century Japan, where having multiple names was fairly common.
And I guess in our modern age there are subcultural pockets of that, too. I'm active in roller derby, and everybody in that culture considers your "skate name" to be your main name.

assigning someone a name when they're incapable of expressing their intention (such as being a larval human) as a purely utility function is fine, but once they express a desire to use another that is the one which should be used
