There's many barriers to entry for Fediverse adoption.
One of the biggest barriers is setting up an instance.
It should be easier for people to set up their own services.
Setting up Mastodon or Pixelfed should be as easy as setting up WordPress.

@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social @atomicpoet@mastodon.social you just joined today. I'm pretty sure AtomicPoet -- who's been here for a lot longer -- knows what he's talking about. And yes, by joining a masto instance, you are on the fediverse. I'm not on your instance, but still interacting with you.
@atomicpoet this here demonstrates that not even you actually understand what this “platform” is.
@IcyNectarine If you're on one instance on the Fediverse, you're on the Fediverse.
All your messages have been duplicated and federated elsewhere on other instances.
Hence, "Fediverse".
@atomicpoet I’m not on the fediverse. I’m on one instance of the fediverse, and signing up was non trivial.
@IcyNectarine As long as you're here on the Fediverse, you're helping my so-called "delusion" come along ?
@atomicpoet keep being delusional.
@IcyNectarine Keep being angry.
@atomicpoet you’re demonstrably a chode.
@IcyNectarine Mastodon isn't even the only Fediverse service. Tumblr is integrating ActivityPub, so is Mozilla, Flickr, and Post.
So the notion that this is as big as social media decentralization gets is demonstrably laughable.
What Mastodon has actually done is validate the feasibility of ActivityPub.
@atomicpoet as long as, when googling mastodon, you arrive at mastodon.social as the first entry, and then upon hitting “sign up” they go “HAHA JOKES ON YOU YOU CANT SIGN UP HERE” you’ve already lost 99% of the people.
@IcyNectarine And yet the facts speak for themselves. Email was decentralized 50 years ago, and people still use it.
It's already been done, and it's being done again.
@atomicpoet you’re wrong.
@IcyNectarine Nope, if the web itself is decentralized, then social media can be decentralized too.
@atomicpoet if you want it to actually compete with twitter and other social networks the it needs to be a thing you can actually sign up to without having to decide which of the 100s of “instances” is the one you want to sign up to.
Mastodon is as big as it’ll ever get unless that changes.
@IcyNectarine Yep! If you want zero barriers to entry, then put every tangible service inside one app that's overseen by one giant corporation.
Then we don't need any pesky instances or websites.
@atomicpoet haha, no.
@IcyNectarine I mean, you might as well say the barrier of entry is "WTF is a website".
@atomicpoet then the barrier of entry is always going to be “WTF is an instance”
@IcyNectarine Instances are a non-negotiable, however.
@atomicpoet the first barrier of entry is instances.
@thatonecalculator @IcyNectarine I think I got blocked by that guy ?
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social probably because you're using some weird third party client without notifications...
@thatonecalculator “today” no. And you aren’t interacting with me, because the “fediverse” isn’t showing me your post except if I click on my own post first. No notifications. Not in my feed, not in my mentions tab.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social btw, you show up fine for me on Calckey. Notifications and all.
Also the fact that I'm interacting with you at all shows that we're both on the same platform.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social client software ≠ server software
And I don't see anything wrong with that screenshot you sent, there I am, right in your notifications.
@thatonecalculator but it’s all third party, isn’t that the point?
Moot anyway since it’s not in the “official” client either.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social also, that client is Ivory. It's in pre-alpha. If you use unfinished software, you'll get an unfinished experience
@thatonecalculator @IcyNectarine Ivory is made by @tapbots. It's not even out of beta yet.
I'm on that person's same instance and I receive their notifications without a hitch when I use the web client.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social the official client showed the notification though??
Also, I figured it out because AtomicPoet commented it, but I think you blocked him
@thatonecalculator you didn’t know what it was at all a minute ago, and as I already pointed out, the official client didn’t show it either.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social "a novelty for tech nerds?" What about the millions of non-techy users?
I think you might have a better experience if you try the fediverse through software that isn't mastodon, to be honest. Give https://i.calckey.cloud a try and get back to me.
@thatonecalculator the second reply is.
https://stop.voring.me/notes/9a2z17cheq
Not that one though. The platform doesn’t work, because it’s not one platform, and it’s never going to replace actual social media.
It’s a novelty for tech nerds (like myself), but I’m intelligent enough to actually realise that it’s got no mass market appeal.
@IcyNectarine@mastodon.social see my other comment, give it a try. You'll probably have a much better experience.
@thatonecalculator it didn’t. And still hasn’t. Only the ones after me first pointing out that I never got a notification.
