The part of the Speaker of the House elections that bothered me the most was that the Republican leadership chose to negotiate with the extremist wing of the party rather than make a deal with the Democrats to end the stalemate.
We would all have been much better off if the deal on the table was "act normal", "pass reasonable bills", "keep the government operating" and "work together", rather than whatever wild backroom agreement actually went down.

@evan The full party? If every Democrat in the House voted for a Republican, there would have been an utter cataclysm within the party membership nationwide! Every member would have a challenger in the next primary running on "This guy voted for a REPUBLICAN!!!"

No government shutdown, no debt ceiling baloney, pass a budget each year, minimize punitive investigations.
Whatever concessions they got, they would be a hell of a lot better for all of us than the ones the extremists asked for.
